Undergraduate Study in Philosophy

Degrees in Philosophy

Student may do either a BA in Philosophy or a BSc in Philosophy. All undergraduate courses in philosophy are in the schedule for the BA degree and most (but not all) are in the BSc degree. Please consult the University Calendar.

Course Structure

Kandinsky - Blue MountainPlease ensure that you have the appropriate pre-requisites for the courses that you may wish to do in the second and third years. In Philosophy, 15 or 18 points at 100-level is sufficient to advance to most 200-level courses. However, some 200- and 300-level courses have more specific prerequisites, so it's important to plan ahead. Note that PHIL233 Epistemology and Metaphysics is required for a major in Philosophy. The prerequisities for entry to individual courses are set out for each course at Stages Two and Three.

Tutorials

Tutorials are offered for all students in each first year course in philosophy. Resources permitting, tutorials may also be offered in some second-year courses. Where tutorials are offered, regular attendance is strongly recommended. Tutorial lists are posted in the Philosophy Programme at the start of the course. To enrol, place your name on the appropriate list, choosing a time that suits you. Tutorials normally begin in the second or third week of term and details are announced in the first lecture in each course.

Undergraduate students who wish to discuss their courses should do so with the Undergraduate Coordinator. Postgraduate students who wish to plan their course of study should consult the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator.

Students with Disabilities

The Philosophy Programme is sympathetic to the needs of students with disabilities. If you have a disability that creates problems with your study in any way, do not hesitate to speak to staff about it.

The School's contact for students with disabilities is Diane Proudfoot. Further information and assistance is available from the Disability Support Service.
