Introduction
History and Philosophy of Science (HAPS) helps form an important link between science (including engineering and medicine) and the humanities. Established at the University of Canterbury in 2002, it is a flourishing programme for study at 100-300, 400, and thesis-degree levels.
HAPS involves important forms of reflection on what the modern condition of humankind is all about. To understand the present day or fathom the future, you obviously need to reflect about science. HAPS is a vital field of study for critically understanding the provenance of our collective situation, and for evaluating both the hopes and the worries that it is reasonable to have concerning the prospect for human beings.
HPS Programme Co-ordinators and academic staff
The co-coordinators of the HAPS programme, Drs Philip Catton (Philosophy), Clemency Montelle (Mathematics), and Andy Pratt (Chemistry), collectively span the three University of Canterbury Colleges of Arts, Engineering and Science, and each make significant teaching contributions to the programme. Many other University of Canterbury academics in a variety of fields are also involved.
