School financial assistance for thesis writers

  1. The School of Humanities assists thesis writers by reimbursing their research expenses up to the amount of $300 for MA students and $300 per year for up to three years for PhD students. Honours students may claim up to $200 for expenses such as interloans, photocopying, binding, etc. Postgraduate students with special needs (eg, travel for research) may apply for Humanities contestable research funding.
  2. Research expenses include small cost items, such as photocopying, interloan charges, photographs, and map and other graphic work. Large cost items (exceeding $200), most typically travel within New Zealand or purchases of research material, require the written authorisation of the student's supervisor.
  3. Large purchases of research material (exceeding $200) remain University property. Such material must be deposited in the University Library on completion of the thesis (or termination of enrolment).
  4. The University's Lester Fund is also available for Master's candidates "who have incurred heavy personal expenses in research". Applications have to be with the Registrar either by 31 March or 30 September and must be supported by the Head of School. Claims of less than $100 are not considered and no grant will normally exceed $200 (at present). Within this total more than one application may be made.
  5. History thesis students whose research may be enhanced by a trip to overseas activities may apply for travel assistance to the Canterbury History Foundation's Friends and Graduates Travel Awards fund.
