Schools liaison

The History Programme at Canterbury has always maintained close links with History teachers in contributing secondary schools, and has provided examiners for the Bursaries and Scholarships examination from time to time over many years. In the 1960s a Junior Historical Association flourished until curriculum changes contributed to its recess in 1975, but the founding of the NZ Historical Association in 1989 led to an energetic campaign to promote History in schools, with a road-show called 'The Great History Mystery'. Refresher courses for teachers and senior students were hosted by the programme throughout the 1980s, but the Canterbury History Teachers' Association has now taken over most of the professional development needs of local History Teachers. Refresher lectures for year 13 (NCEA level 3) History students are held in August each year.

In addition to staff visits with the university's Liaison Officer, the History Programme sends copies of its student guide, History at Canterbury, each year to all contributing schools.
