An Edwardian's View of Dickens and His Illustrators
Gareth Cordery's book, An Edwardian's View of Dickens and His Illustrators: Harry Furniss's 'A Sketch of Boz,' has just been published by ELT Press in its British Authors Series. It is an edited and annotated transcription of Furniss's unpublished 1905 lecture on the main illustrators of Dickens's novels in the previous seventy years. The lecture was illustrated by 63 magic lantern slides and these are reproduced alongside the written text. The Introduction summarises Dickens's reputation in the early twentieth century, the cultural significance of the platform lecture, the changing style of illustration and caricature, and the commercial and ideological exploitation of Dickens at the turn of the century.
