Scholarships and Awards

A large number of scholarships are available to University of Canterbury students generally from the Scholarships Section. The following are available only to Classics students:

Alabaster Scholarships

Value: $2,250 (two awards)

Candidates shall sit a written examination in Latin or Greek (or both), and submit an essay on a classical topic. A general knowledge of both Greek and Roman history is required. Forms and further details available from the scholarship office scholarships@canterbury.ac.nz, where applicants should register their notice of intention to submit entries for the award.

Tenure: One year
Eligibility: Open to any matriculated and undergraduate student of the University of Canterbury
Study Level: Open to students of Latin or Greek

The L.G. Pocock Memoria Prize in Ancient History

The L.G. Pocock Prize in Ancient History was instituted by Professor Ernst Badian, formerly a student in the Classics Department at the University of Canterbury and now Professor Emeritus of Ancient History in Harvard University, in memory of L.G. Pocock, former Professor of Classics in the University of Canterbury.
Value: $300
