Current and Recent Post-Graduate Study
BA (Honours)
There are three types of Honours degrees offered in the Classics Department.
B.A. (Hons) in Ancient History
B.A. (Hons) in Classics
B.A. (Hons) in Classical Studies
Ancient History
NOTE: For the Ancient History option there is no language requirement, although students will find some language knowledge a distinct advantage.
Requirements:
- CLAS 450 and CLAS 453
- Two courses selected from CLAS 401, 406, 407, CLAS 414-416, CLAS 452-454.
- No candidate may offer more than one of CLAS 401, 415 or 416.
Pre-requisites for the BA(Hons )in Ancient History:
- Any 56 points at 300-level in Classics with an average grade of B+ or above. Students who do not have 56 points at 300-level in Classics, but who do have 56 points at 300-level with an average mark of B+ above in History or in another related subject, may be admitted at the discretion of the Programme Coordinator; plus
- One of CLAS 213, 214, 216, 217, 307, 309, 313 or 318.
Classical Studies
NOTE: For the Classical Studies option there is no language requirement, although students will find some language knowledge a distinct advantage.
Requirements:
- CLAS 460
- CLAS 453
- Two courses selected from CLAS 401-452 and 454 with the approval of the Programme Coordinator.
Pre-requisites for the BA(Hons) in Classical Studies:
- Any 56 points at 300-level in Classics with an average mark of B+ or above. Students who do not have 56 points at 300-level in Classics, but who do have 56 points at 300-level with an average mark of B+ or above in another related subject, may be admitted at the discretion of the Programme Coordinator.
Classics
Requirements:
- Four courses which must include:
i) Either CLAS 402 or CLAS 403;
ii) Either CLAS 401 or CLAS 415 or CLAS 416;
iii) CLAS 480
iv) One course to be selected from CLAS 404-414, CLAS 452 or CLAS 454 with the approval of the Programme Coordinator.
Pre-requisites for the BA(Hons) in Classics:
Either:
- CLAS 331 or 335 or 341 or 345 with a mark of B+ or above, plus any 36 points from CLAS 101-112, 44 points from CLAS 201-226, or 56 points from CLAS 301-326.
Or:
- CLAS 231 or 235 with a mark of B+ or above, and CLAS 143 or 145 with a mark of B+ or above, or CLAS 241 or 245 with a mark of B+ or above and CLAS 131 or 135 with a mark of B+ or above, plus any 56 points from CLAS 301-326.

MA (Master of Arts)
The Master of Arts in Classics comprises two parts
Part I is the same as for B.A. (Honours) in Classics.
Part II is a thesis (CLAS 690)
The prerequisites for entry to Part I of the M.A. in Classics are the same as for B.A. (Honours) in Classics (see above).
To enrol in Part II students must have completed Part I and will be expected to have achieved a B+ average or better over the four courses, OR have a B.A. (Honours) in Ancient History (Classical History prior to 1998) with at least Second Class Honours Division I. In the latter case, however, students will need to have completed:
- either CLAS 231 or 235 with a mark of B+ or above and CLAS 143 or 144 and 145;
- or CLAS 241 or 245 with a mark of B+ or above and CLAS 131 or 134 and 135;
- or either CLAS 331 or 335 or 341 or 345 with a mark of B+ or above.
It may be necessary for such students to undertake a qualifying year in order to complete these requirements.

PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
The Programme welcomes enquiries from any person interested in undertaking research for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. In the first instance prospective candidates, who have achieved at the very least B.A. (Honours) in Classics or Ancient History, who are well-versed in ancient languages, and who have a reading knowledge of at least one modern language (such as German or French), should consult the Programme Coordinator.
In certain circumstances, individuals whose academic work to date has been in a related subject area (for example, in Art History), may be considered for enrolment in the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
