Learning Latin and Greek
Has your study of the ancient Greeks and Romans been interesting? Learn an ancient language and come to grips with the Greeks and Romans - their ideas, their poetry, and their history. Beginners' courses are offered.
Greek and Latin are offered in courses which start from scratch and lead on to B.A. with Honours and M.A. No previous knowledge of the languages is required by those taking the first-year courses, CLAS 134, CLAS 135, CLAS 144 and CLAS 145. Potential students of Greek 1 or Latin 1 should contact the programme as early as possible. They will find it helpful if they can make a start on the basic structure of the language before the term begins. The introductory chapters of the Greek and Latin textbooks can be downloaded below.
Greek 2 (CLAS 234) and 3 (CLAS 334) continue the language study along with work on set authors.
Latin 2 (CLAS 244) and 3 (CLAS 344) look at the work of a variety of prose and verse authors.
A special course CLAS 342: Readings from Latin Literature, is designed as a course for intending Honours students. Authors whom the students have not previously studied will be read to increase exposure to the various types of Latin literature.
Since Greek 1 and Latin 1 are beginner's courses, certain candidates may proceed directly to Greek 2 and Latin 2. This will depend on the individual's suitability - check with the Programme Coordinator of Classics.
