30 June 2011: Call for Submissions for Issue No. 4

Postgraduate students from tertiary institutions in New Zealand and Australia researching in the field of visual arts and culture are invited to submit their work for Oculus: Postgraduate Journal for Visual Arts Research Issue No. 4 May 2012.

Submissions in the form of academic essays (3000-5000 words), studio work, interviews (1000-1500 words) and reviews (500-1000 words) may now be received for consideration.
Please see the Submissions page for guidelines and information about due dates.

3 June 2011: Oculus Issue No. 3 Available Now

Issue No. 3 was successfully launched last Friday at the University of Canterbury, School of Fine Arts Ilam Gallery in conjunction with the opening of ‘nth degree,’ featuring recent works by students from the School of Fine Arts Masters programme.

There was a great turn out to support the launch of the journal's third issue so thanks to all those who came! Another big thank you to the organisers of ‘nth degree’ and the Oculus Team who have done a fantastic job in producing Issue No. 3 over the last year!

20 May 2011: Launch of Issue No. 3

Issue No. 3 of Oculus: Postgraduate Journal for Visual Arts Research will be launched at 5.30pm on Friday 27 May at the School of Fine Arts gallery, University of Canterbury, Ilam Gallery, Christchurch.
The launch of Issue No. 3 will coincide with the opening of the 2011 University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts Masters exhibition, 'nth degree.'

Issue No. 3 of Oculus features a selection of essays, studio research, interviews and exhibition reviews by postgraduate students working at various tertiary institutions throughout New Zealand and Australia.

Oculus will be on sale for $15.00 at the School of Fine Arts from Friday 27 May. It can be purchased here by UC staff and students for $10.00. Please contact oculus@canterbury.ac.nz for more information or see our website. We look forward to celebrating a great new issue of Oculus with you at the launch!

31 May 2010: OCULUS 2010: Visual Arts Postgraduate Conference, 28-29th May 2010 & Launch of Issue No. 2

woodcutThe University of Canterbury was proud to host OCULUS 2010: Visual Arts Postgraduate Conference.
Postgraduate students from both New Zealand and Australia studying visual arts and culture participated in a two-day conference, and presented a range of papers related to their current research projects.

The conference opened with welcome drinks and the launch of Oculus: Postgraduate Journal for Visual Arts Research, Issue No. 2 at SOFA Gallery. This was followed by a full day of presentations on campus at the University of Canterbury on Saturday 29 May.

Jonathan Mane-Wheoki, Head of Elam School of Art at The University of Auckland opened Saturday's proceedings with a keynote lecture.

26 February 2009: Oculus Issue No. 1 Available Now

The first issue of Oculus was launched on 24 February 2009 at SOFA Gallery, Christchurch, in conjunction with the opening of the graduate exhibition MASTERS 08, which featured works by four students from the School of Fine Arts MFA programme.
