Art History and Theory courses at Canterbury are amongst the best taught, best organised and most interesting in the University. They aim to increase enjoyment of art by increasing understanding of it, and to train you in looking, thinking and writing.

There are great opportunities for our graduates, many of whom have been successful in gaining positions in the art world. They have secured jobs in universities, polytechnics, schools, museums and libraries, as well as in journalism, marketing, tourism and heritage conservation.

Whatever your background and whatever your career aims, we know that the time you spend studying Art History and Theory at Canterbury will prove to be a positive and rewarding experience.

News

The department is running two seminars on practical aspects of the discipline of art history in the first semester.

Both seminars are held at 12:00-1:00 in Room 413, History Building (Art History teaching room)

Wednesday, 28 March – Photographing artworks (open to 300 level ARTH students and above)

Wednesday, 16 May – Managing digital images for print, web, and research (open to 200 level ARTH students and above)

Issue No. 3 of Oculus features a selection of essays, studio research, interviews and exhibition reviews by postgraduate students working at various tertiary institutions throughout New Zealand and Australia.
