Writing and Submission of the ARTH/ARTT 480 Research Paper

Submission date 31 October

This course requires students to work on a supervised research project leading to the presentation of a long essay of approximately 10,000 words . It gives students experience in carrying out original research, organising and analysing material and placing it within a larger art-historical context. Particular attention is given to the skills demonstrated in completing ARTH/ARTT 480 in determining students' suitability for advancing to the MA thesis. All research papers will be marked by internal examiners and moderated by the external examiner.

The research is pursued throughout the year, at a pace directed by consultation with the supervisor. Developed gradually over the year, the project should be submitted in draft form to the supervisor no later than 30 September. The final date for the submission of the finished Research Paper is the last day of October. Student progress will be monitored by the Postgraduate Co-ordinator, to whom any general problems should be brought as they may occur.

Topics should be original, practicable and clearly related to the student's past or current studies. They may be empirically based or theoretically inclined. Students should consider staff specialisms as well as their own interests to arrive at a topic proposal. Past research papers can be found in the Art History Resource Room (Level 4, History) for consultation. The research paper should be typed, double-spaced, illustrated in any format deemed appropriate by the student and their supervisor, and presented in a form suitable for permanent binding. Two copies should be submitted to the Humanities Office by the due date. These will be retained by the School and any additional copies required by the student should be made before submission.
